One of my sweet, middle school cheerleaders was diagnosed with acute leukemia last week. She has been sick since the first week of June. I remember her not feeling well Monday during the last week of school. I thought she had a cold or the flu. I would never have dreamed she had cancer. After several doctors appointments and a visit to the emergency room, the doctors started to notice that her lab work was not adding up. She was diagnosed on Thursday, June 18th, and she started chemo on Friday, June 19th. Her treatment plan will be chemo for the next six months. Once she has completed the chemo treatments, she will continue to be monitored closely for the next two years to make sure she remains cancer free. From that point on, she will have check-ups once a year. The doctors have been very reassuring that they think she will make a complete recovery. They were so impressed with how her body handled the first two rounds of chemo, that they let her go home three days early.
It breaks my heart that she is so young and having to fight such a hard battle. Her family is amazing, and I have no doubt that they will continue to provide her with love and support until she is cancer free. The 8th grade cheerleaders have been great! They have a done a awesome job reaching out to Imani and supporting her. Imani will not be able to come to school until her chemo treatments are complete. The doctors and her family feel like it will be best to complete the first semester in the home bound program. She will still be a huge part of our cheerleading program and events. She is such an amazing student that she has already asked about meeting her teachers before the school year starts.
Please pray for her strength over the next few months, for her family and the doctors that are taking care of her.
